The Chinese Tea Service

After the marriage service, or oftentimes the next day, the brides serve drink to their relatives. This is a symbolic gesture made to show respect and appreciation for the aid and love their families and ancestors have provided throughout their lives. The couple also offers their parents red envelopes filled with money ( also called hong bao ) as a symbol of good luck.

This enjoyable custom can be carried out either before or after the marriage ceremony. During the procession, the bridegroom and his posse will light firecrackers, reach gongs, and have lanterns and banners to ward off evil spirits and welcome their new bride. The groom and his entourage are typically denied a view of the marital home until they turn in sufficiently purple envelopes, or chi bao, to satisfy their hosts when they arrive at the bride’s home.

This is a lovely way to honor and appreciate the important union between a husband and wife. The couple’s desires for prosperity and happiness may be kept at the forefront of their minds as they continue to group the spiritual fire.
